On 28 November 2025, something powerful happened in Calabar.

More than 170 girls, aged 10 to 17, gathered with curiosity in their eyes and bold ideas in their hearts — ready to learn, collaborate, and imagine how technology can be used to solve real problems in their communities.

The Technovation Girls Launch Workshop, held in Calabar, marked the beginning of an exciting journey into technology, innovation, and problem-solving for young girls who are eager to shape the future.

Creating a Safe Space for Girls to Learn and Dream

The workshop was designed not just as a training, but as a safe and inspiring space — one where girls could ask questions freely, work in teams, and begin to see themselves as problem solvers and creators, not just consumers of technology.

Through interactive sessions, participants were introduced to:

  • The vision and mission of Technovation Girls
  • The idea that technology can be a tool for social change
  • The importance of teamwork, creativity, and confidence

For many of the girls, this was their first exposure to structured tech innovation — and it sparked something new.

Learning by Doing: Design Thinking in Action

One of the most exciting moments of the day was the Design Thinking session.

Working in teams, the girls identified real challenges they see around them, from safety and health issues to education gaps and environmental concerns. They then began mapping out technology-driven solutions, learning that innovation starts with empathy and observation.

The energy in the room was contagious:

  • Ideas were shared.
  • Laughter filled the space.
  • Confidence grew with every activity.

By the end of the team challenge, each group had taken the first steps toward building a solution that matters.

Inspiration That Hit Home

A special highlight was the Tech Talk, where a young speaker shared his journey into technology and innovation. His story reminded the girls that background does not limit potential — and that big dreams are possible with the right support and persistence.

Moments like this are crucial. Representation and real-life stories help young girls see what is possible.

What We Achieved Together

The impact of the Calabar workshop was both visible and measurable:

  • 172 girls participated from different schools and communities
  • Participants were grouped into age-appropriate teams for the upcoming Technovation training cycle
  • Volunteer mentors, including UI/UX designers and a project manager, signed up to support the girls
  • Teachers praised the hands-on, practical approach of the workshop
  • Highly motivated girls were identified to proceed into the full Technovation training program (January–April 2026)

But beyond the numbers, something more important happened: Girls left believing they belong in tech.

What Comes Next

This launch workshop is just the beginning.

From January 2026, selected participants will enter the full Technovation cycle — learning, building, and preparing to compete in the 2026 Technovation Girls Competition, where they will develop real solutions to real problems using technology.

Calabar showed us what is possible when girls are given opportunity, mentorship, and belief.

And we are just getting started.
