From September 23 to 27, 2024, iKapture Centre for Development had the honor of hosting the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS) Calabar program. This prestigious program, funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, brought together over 15 participants from different states across Nigeria, including Calabar, to explore the evolving field of computational social science. The program, organized by Academic Hive for African Scholars, created a platform for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career faculty members to learn and apply computational techniques in social science research.
What is SICSS?
The Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS) is an international initiative aimed at introducing participants to cutting-edge computational methods used in social science research. These methods include machine learning, big data analysis, text analysis, and social network analysis, all of which are essential in today’s data-driven world. The program combines lectures, group discussions, and project-based learning to give participants hands-on experience in these techniques. Participants leave with new skills, fresh perspectives, and the ability to use these tools in their own academic research and professional development.
iKapture’s Role in the SICSS Calabar 2024 Program
This year, iKapture took on a pivotal role as both the venue and host for the SICSS Calabar Program. The Centre, well-known for its commitment to youth development and training, became a space for academic discourse, learning, and collaboration.
iKapture ensured that all logistics were taken care of, from booking accommodation for out-of-town guests to organizing catering for lunch and tea breaks each day. We worked closely with Academic Hive to ensure that the participants’ stay was as comfortable as possible, offering a seamless experience throughout the five-day event.
At iKapture, we pride ourselves on creating a conducive environment for learning. For the SICSS Calabar Program, we provided well-equipped training rooms, and comfortable breakout spaces for participants to work on their projects and network with fellow scholars. Our hospitality team ensured that timely hotel bookings were made for participants coming from outside Calabar, allowing them to focus fully on the program. We also arranged daily meals and refreshments, making sure participants were well taken care of during their time at the centre. By handling these logistics, we helped participants focus on the program’s intense learning schedule without any distractions.
